Featured Image – “Rocky Mountain Wilderness”

This photograph was made during a back country hike near Deckers, Colorado. The late afternoon light emphasizes the stark shapes of the rocks and rugged beauty of the area. This area was the scene of a large fire a few years before the image was made and the results of the fire, the bare mountain sides and the bare tree trunks show the damage of the fire, but new growth also shows how the destruction of fire produces new...

Featured Image – “Price Falls”

Price Falls is not a very large waterfall but it is a beautiful setting. And it is surrounded by several smaller cascades. The whole setting is quiet and peaceful. It is one of Oklahoma’s more intimately beautiful settings. But it is difficult to photograph because it is in deep forest shade with some very bright patches of sun so the photograph must be made on a very cloudy day (as this one was) or very early or late in the...

Featured Image – “Female Mountain Boomer”

The official name of this little beast is “Collared Lizard”. In Oklahoma we call it the “Mountain Boomer”, a far more colorful name for a colorful little lizard. This is a female and, like many species, it is more conservatively attired than is the male who has a bright turquoise body and yellow head. She posed nicely and put herself in just the ideal light. The photograph was made in the Wichita Mountains of southwestern...

Featured Image – “Glowing Seedhead – Forest Light”

On an early morning walk, I found this glowing seedhead in a dramatic pool of light against deep forest shade. I only had my wildlife lens with me which was not the ideal lens for this shot. But it produced a good basic image which I edited to increase the drama and to emphasize the green stem as the only real color in the...

Featured Image – “Mountain Wilderness”

The wilderness near Deckers, Colorado is both dramatic and sparse. A few years ago this area was burned by a large fire. The result is a bare mountain landscape with a few tree trunks sticking up by themselves. But the land is returning and fire regenerates as it destroys so lots of new growth is evident. This photograph was made during an early spring back country...

Featured Image – “Just a Little Preening”

Birds make fascinating photographic subjects. Many are very beautiful and their behavior is always interesting. This one is the African Grey Crowned Crane. It is a spectacular – and very large – bird. This one was busy preening itself when it struck this unusual pose which accentuated the beauty of its feathers and its magnificent...

Featured Image – “Sunset on Mt. Scott”

This image was made from the top of Mt. Scott in southern Oklahoma. Mt. Scott is in the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge near Lawton. This is a rugged area inhabited by buffalo (I know it’s supposed to be “bison” but I just can’t bring myself to use that term), elk, turkey, wild longhorn cattle, mountain boomers (“collared lizard” sounds so dull), deer, and rattlesnakes among other species, Here the animals run free and the people are warned to be alert for them. The Wichita Mountains were revered by the Kiowa, Comanche...

Featured Image – “Red Rock Canyon Wall”

Canyon Wall in Red Rock Canyon State Park (Oklahoma). There are at least 3 state parks with the same name but the one in Oklahoma is a beautiful little gem – and one of my favorite destinations. It’s right off of I-40 and only a few miles west of Oklahoma City. Red Rock Canyon is small box canyon with vertical red sandstone walls surrounded by deep forest. Plenty of climbing opportunities, plenty of wildlife, lots of lush green in the summer and, of course, those red canyon walls that are a photographic adventure all by...

Featured Image – “Blue Heron in Flight”

I learned photography with film. My first serious work was with a 4 x 5 view camera, sheet film, and Ansel Adams’ zone system. The view camera is slow and deliberate to work with but the exquisite detail is alluring so the landscape is a natural subject and one to which I have always been drawn. But I have been interested in wildlife too, and, lately, I have been intrigued by the challenge of capturing birds in flight. The Great Blue Heron is a beautiful bird. Although I have photographed many of them, they are hard to resist. Getting...
